Artist Statement
My current body of work encompasses a variety of watercolor paintings as well as drawings done in charcoal and graphite on paper. I find myself interested in a myriad of subjects and enjoy bringing a varied array of them to life in my artwork. I’ve always had talent in drawing and I often spend hours developing the details in each one I do. I understand the importance of expressive mark-making to bring out important aspects of my subject, also paying close attention to texture, light and shadow and contour of form. I also enjoy the entirely different experience of watercolor painting, which has its unique set of challenges and techniques. My watercolor paintings tend to be rich with multiple glazes and details that enhance an illusion of 3-dimensionality. Each painting requires lots of patience and usually takes me several days to complete. Painting is like a delicate dance between my brush and the transparent pigments that blend and flow on my paper that I find both satisfying and meditative. I strive to keep my subject material new and interesting and use the classes I teach as my artistic muse. This process has allowed me to create an eclectic array of visual images in watercolor paintings and drawings. I enjoy what I do very much and I feel a close personal connection to each individual artwork I make. I hope those who view my artwork will have an enjoyable experience as well.
